Methodology tutorials are offered to second year students reading for a Bachelor degree in English along the academic for one and a half hours per week. Methodology tutorials are designed primarily as an introduction to the world of academic research, focusing primarily on research ethics and academic integrity.
Methodology tutorials introduce students to academic writing techniques that allow them master the scientific discourse. The latter is described as an objective discourse characterized by precision, systematicity, and rigor of the argument. The practice of these scientific writing techniques is introduced through multiple learning activities, such as paraphrasing, reformulating, and summarizing with concrete examples. Students are then introduced to the different citation styles that ensure the researcher's intellectual integrity, such as the MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association) citation styles most commonly used in the humanities and social sciences.
Examples used in Methodology tutorials include the insertion of direct quotations into the text, recognition of others ideas, use of footnotes, and insertion of bibliographic, electronic or printed sources. Students are also introduced to the use of different bibliographic sources, such as journal articles, books, research manuals, handbooks, dissertations and theses, speeches and lectures, monographs, and websites.
