This course is intended to third year inorganic chemistry students
Outline
Molecular spectroscopy relates to the interactions that occur between molecules and electromagnetic radiation. Molecules have the ability to absorb, emit or scatter the electromagnetic radiation.
Questions that arise:
What is Spectroscopy?
What does electromagnetic radiation do to the molecules?
How can we produce a molecular spectrum?
What information does the molecular spectrum give?
Achievements:
Understanding of how light interacts with molecules.
Determination of molecular energy states and transitions.
Use of spectroscopy to quantitatively characterize molecule.
Extraction of molecular information.
Molecular spectroscopy content:
Introduction
Microwave Spectroscopy
Infrared Spectroscopy
Raman Spectroscopy
Ultraviolet and Visible Spectroscopy
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
