As its name indicates, this course is concerned with language and culture. For the first semester, students will analyze language as a linguistic and communicative construct and culture as a social one. They will then move to look at the relationship between the two and explore the importance of culture teaching through language classes. Students will later tackle the theoretical base of teaching culture if the EFL classroom through different perspectives, how to implement culture teaching in the EFL context and different strategies for doing so. Teaching the cultural aspect goes along with rising students' awareness about cultural diversity, communication, and misunderstandings that might prevail. Hence, in our classes, we will explore intercultural awareness, its importance, and ways to cultivate it through language classes. This will be the content of the first semester. For the second semester, students will look at intercultural communication, analyze some concepts (lingua franca & Linguiculture), and have a broad overview of corpus analysis related to culture and language.
